Penn Street Cricket Club Lost by 37 runs
Match report
Unlike the West Indies, where temperatures were in the mid 20’s for the Twenty20 the day before, Twyford offered something a little bit more Siberian than Indian in terms of temperature.
Penn Street to the field and on an unpredictable track looked to break down the opposition early. Led by Paul Goodchild and Jack Mendy, they sent down some fast, unplayable balls. Backed up by some fairly solid fielding, the opposition struggled to get going.
Goody missed the games first opportunity for a wicket when, with the batsman well out his crease, he misses the stumps from a short distance. However, it wasn’t long before the breakthrough came. Mendy with a fantastic inswinger sent the batsmen back to the pavilion. It wasn’t long before Goody got his just deserves and took two wickets, particularly as he bowled a spell of 14 overs (is this a record?).
The biggest turn in the match came with the McSorley- Fletcher combination. With both of them bowling hard and fast at the opposition, causing all sorts of problems, it was the three wickets McSorley took. All three wickets were caught by Fletch from exactly the same shot and in near enough the same spot. He also added the scalp of T. Fort with a beautiful delivery, bowling him two runs short of his half century.
Chasing a total of 147 for the win, Fletch set about some steady scoring, supported by Steve Smith, looking to repeat his monumental stand in his previous match. However, the Twyford bowlers’ were just as solid in their bowling as the early Penn Street attack, but with less pace. Unfortunately, there was enough pace to snap Smith’s bat and send it into early retirement (not to mention the two bats from Twyford’s innings that also didn’t last the game).
The initial stand didn’t last and after a flurry of wickets, including Hazeldine’s second Golden Duck in a row, the momentum swung with Twyford. McSorley and Mendy, though, had other ideas. Following up with their heroics with the ball earlier, the pair set a stand of 42 and gave Penn Street hope of getting something out of the game. However, Mendy then departed and reappeared as a runner for McSorley, who pulled a hamstring chasing a quick run.
By now a win was out of the question and after Bateman fell, it was up to Goody and the injured McSorley to see out the game. Despite seeing Goody hit his 150th run for Penn Street, it was not enough as we were bowled out for 110.
