Chartridge v Penn Street Cricket Club PSCC on Sun 04 Jul 2010 at 14.00
Penn Street Cricket Club Won by 7 wickets (10 balls)

Match report Man of the Match: K. Werrell

Penn Street produced a solid performance to overcome Chartridge CC on Independence day 2010.

On a bright Summer’s afternoon Penn Street took to the field after losing the toss, with hopes of restricting Chartridge to a minimal target on a flat pitch that offered very little support to the bowlers, and an outfield that resembled concrete.

Chartridge found themselves 0-1 after a great ball from opener Pete Lofty, which broke through the defences of Chartridge’s aggressive looking opener.

The pressure continued to build as Matt Bannister turned the screw from the other end, bowling tight leg spin that caused the Chartridge top order some difficulty.

The pressure eventually told as Steve Smith held a good catch at midwicket.

However, much of the pressure Penn Street had exerted towards the start was quickly released at Bannister’s expense, as the Chartridge no. 4 set to work taking him apart hitting some big straight shots and putting away the straight ball.

Tyler “chest pain” Armiger came on to bowl after a tight opening spell from Lofty, bowling 3 overs before leaving the field due to what is believed to have been fatigue.

However sources suggest another cause for Armiger’s departure, namely the consumption of an apple based beverage the night before.

Fortunately a cock up in the organisational machine at Penn Street meant that they were able bring on a ‘super sub’ in Nick Loftus.

Penn Street’s bowlers toiled away in the heat of the sun but struggled to retain control over the Chartridge batting Line up, with many, many runs leaked through diabolical fielding. This is an area that needs to be addressed by everyone in the club.

A shining light for Penn Street was debutant Kieran Werrell, straight out of the Penn Street academy, he bowled two excellent spells of 4 overs each and was rewarded with figures of 1-37. If this is any indication of the future of Penn Street cricket, then it’s a very bright future!

Penn Street overall produced a disappointing performance in the field and Chartridge’s 249-4 should have been considerably lower.

After a great tea, Penn Street set to work chasing down their target of 250.

Chris Fletcher and Dave Harrison created a solid platform and found themselves 127-0 at drinks, although as is so often the case drinks bring wickets. Harry was the first to go for 55 bringing Juppy to the crease who continued in a similar vein finishing on 75, with a not out. He is beginning to run away with the batting cup.

Fletcher fell soon after for an excellent 53 bringing in James Sempill who scored a quick fire 17 but got a leading edge and gave an easy catch.

Chris Loftus kept his nerve, playing some absolutely great shots as he helped Juppy guide the street home for a great victory with 250-3 from 38.3 overs, a truly great batting performance!
