Penn Street Cricket Club PSCC v Kays on Fri 10 Jun 2011 at 14.00
Penn Street Cricket Club Won by 1 Wicket
Match report
By Friday lunchtime it wasn’t just raining - it was hacking it down, and if our opponents had come from round the corner we would have called off festivities for the day. But Kays had come down all the way from Worcester, and by 3pm the rain had eased off, and by 3.30pm we were able to start a 31 over match – admittedly on a damp pitch – and Fletch had no hesitation in giving them the opportunity to see what impact the rain had had on the wicket.
At first it looked as if it was not much, as Wyatt and Edwards smote the ball to various parts of the ground with gusto. But Jack Mendy was bowling with purpose, and the ever-dangerous Wyatt hit him to Chris Fletcher at Mid-off. Enter Mason, and one ball later he was our, bowled by a Mendy special. McCann looked solid and threatening at one end, but at the other wickets were falling with regularity. A brilliant catch by Bobby Fryer off Callum Sempill’s bowling saw to Cowan, an even more spectacular catch behind his head finally put paid to McCann.
Needless to say, captain Russ Edwards came in and picked the bad ball, scoring a handy 21, and the total of 161 was more than Penn Street would have liked, but it was also in range if Penn Street had a good start.
That seemed to be possible as Matt Bannister and Chris Fletcher started strongly, Matt in particular punishing the loose balls. Fletch hit some nice shots before falling lbw to a ball from Jason Beck which wasn’t too high at all. But Matt was being ably supported by Dave Lander who rolled back the years for a quickfire 16. Matt looked so comfortable that it was a shock for everyone when he was caught out for a splendid 66. Ed Harris started comfortably, but he was very unlucky to fall to a catch by Mathews that was almost as good as the catches by Bobby Fryer. That brought Jack Mendy to the wicket, and the spin bowlers were very much to his taste. A couple of massive sixes – but then he strayed out his crease and was out stumped, Penn St still about 30 runs short but with masses of time to go.
But then the classic Penn St collapse. Sutherland, Rankin, Fryer all in quick succession. We were down to our last pair and still needed 17 runs to win. All depended on Callum Sempill and Tyler Armiger, facing the highly experienced Edwards. But they saw him out, they picked the bad ball, they didn’t take any risks. And they inched towards the target slowly, inexorably, far too slowly for the spectators on the side. 12 balls to go, three runs to win. A pull to leg from Callum, three runs – no, don’t risk the third run. Scores tied. But then a short ball and Callum pulls once again and this time it goes straight to the boundary – a famous win for Penn St against their old friends and rivals.
So back to the pub, and a splendid evening of music and general carousing was had by all.
Man of the Match : impossible to choose between Jack Mendy’s 4 wickets and rapid-fire 36, Matt Bannister for his imperious 66 and splendid performance behind the stumps – or for that matter Bobby Fryer for his two wonderful catches and Callum & Tyler for their last wicket heroics.
