Penn & Tylers Greeen v Penn Street Cricket Club PSCC on Sun 15 Jun 2008 at 14:00
Penn Street Cricket Club Lost by 1 wicket

Match report The might of Penn Street gathered on the common on the afternoon of the 15th June before the brief trip to local rivals Penn and Tylers Green CC. The mood in the camp was positive, and upon arrival and winning of the toss skipper Chris Fletcher decided to bat on what looked like a decent wicket.

Matt Bannister and George Culbert opened up the innings for the Street, and immediately faced some tough scoring conditions with the opposition bowlers operating with a consistent line from one end and some sharp pace and bounce from the other. However in the face of good bowling, Matt and George resisted and built a slow but steady partnership until Matt fell caught behind for 15, bringing Cherriott to the crease. George departed shortly after for 15, and Penn Street found themselves at 38-2 with 15 overs of the innings gone. The opposition wrung the changes and cycled through a total of 8 bowlers, and wickets fell with frustrating regularity around Chris until he was out as the 6th wicket fell for a well played 33. At this stage a rout was perhaps on the cards, but the lower order rallied well and boosted the score to a competitive, if not a bit below par, 154 with Damo blasting 24* and Josh Culbert an important 21.

With only 154 to defend and short boundaries we knew that a good start was going to be crucial if we were to have any chance of winning the game. Damo and Simon Dale opened up, but with a replacement ball not swinging and some aggressive batsmen they found it difficult to contain the openers and Penn and Tyler’s raced to 58 off 9 overs. Reese came on to bowl, but injured his ankle in his second over which forced Fletch into a bowling change, and he elected to bring Cherriott on from Reese’s end. Chris started well with his usual tight line, and soon he was joined by Matt Bannister bowling from the other end. This bowling partnership proved to be the turning point in the game, as the Street looked down and out when the opposition required only 51 to win with 10 wickets left and still 21 overs to go. Matt struck first, bowling the opener as he tried to cut one off his stumps. Chris followed with a wicket a couple of overs later, and Penn Street began to exert some pressure and control over proceedings. Between them, Matt and Chris toiled away taking a combined 7-55 in 16 overs, Chris finishing with 3 for and Matt with 4. After the pair had finished, Fletch turned to Josh Culbert to get a wicket and continue the push, and he did not disappoint; taking a wicket in his first over. Fletch then brought himself on with Penn and Tyler’s precariously poised at 154-8, the scores level with 2 wickets remaining and a junior member of the opposition at the crease. Fletch finally got one on the stumps and bowled the young lad with the score still on 154, bringing their last man to the crease with one delivery remaining of Fletch’s over. Could the skipper produce the magic ball and secure what would be a memorable tie? The field was brought in to apply the pressure and hopefully take the catch, the crowd hushed in anticipation. Fletch ran in to produce the delivery that could go down in PSCC folklore… but alas it wasn’t meant to be. A long hop gave the batsman the ideal opportunity to win the game, and he pulled it away to the square leg boundary for 4.

A memorable game for the fight back produced, PSCC taking 9-54 but ultimately falling just short.

Notable performances: C.Herriott 33, D.Ribaudo 24*, C.Herriott 3-32, M.Bannister 4-23
