Penn Street Cricket Club PSCC v Roxbourne on Sun 21 Sep 2008 at 13:00
Penn Street Cricket Club Lost by 21 runs

Match report So the penultimate weekend of the season drew to a close as Penn Street faced Roxbourne under the sunny September sky. On what appeared to be a reasonably good wicket Roxbourne got under way batting first, but faced tough opponents in Jack Mendy and Simon Dale who both bowled good opening spells. After a series of very good LBW shouts Jack had the first breakthrough, getting the captain trapped right in front of the stumps. The second wicket proved harder to come by as both bowlers struggled to keep their line and length. Matt turned to the guile and craft of Simon Hennel and the pace and aggression of Damian to seek the breakthrough, and they duly provided by removing the other opener when Damian had him clean bowled with a beauty. He removed the next man in as well, and Penn Street were clawing back the innings after a rocketing start. Simon joined the party later in his spell and finished his 8 overs for a miserly 29 runs. Calum Sempill came on from the pub end but failed to hit his rhythm from the off, but picked up a wicket when their number 5 skied the ball to mid on. He had a second too when the main stay of the Roxbourne innings clubbed one out to Simon Dale on the square leg boundary, Simon taking a good catch to send him back for a good 47 runs. Young Harry Holmes bowled 4 good overs of leg breaks from the wood end and picked up another wicket clean bowled. Simon Dale came back on to finish the innings off and picked himself up a wicket; Roxbourne ending on 176-8 off their 40 overs.

After tea Penn Street went about chasing down a tricky total on a pitch that was keeping a little low. Matt and Juppy opened up and got us off to a steady start, but Peter fell for 16 after being trapped in front of the sticks. Next man in, Peter Naylor, didn’t last long and soon Matt Reavey was joined by his namesake Bannister. Together they went about repairing the damage done, and despite wringing the bowling changes Roxbourne failed to oust either batsman as they started to accelerate. Unfortunately for the Street the partnership faltered when Bannister was caught at point for 32, but had taken the score on with a partnership of over 50. Matt Reavey continued to press on but was undone by a good catch from the keeper standing up, departing for a good 31 and the total on 103-5. Needing close to 8 an over Damian strode to the crease and set about chasing down the target. With able support from Jack Mendy he took us close to victory with an aggressive 30 not out, but ultimately Penn Street fell 22 runs short after a good few closing overs by the Roxbourne quicky. A good effort by all but sadly not quite enough. Bring on Rainham in the final weekend of the ’08 season; can we get to 10 wins this year?!?
