Penn Street Cricket Club PSCC v Little Missenden on Sun 18 Jul 2010 at 14.00
Penn Street Cricket Club Lost by 9 wickets
Match report
Day three of the Penn Street beer festival was honoured by the visit of Little Missenden CC. As you’d expect a few playing members rather over indulged on Friday and Saturday and Sunday was always going to be a challenge. Jupp turned up looking like Oliver Reed after a heavy nights commitments at the festival but managed to put a brave face on whilst running the PSCC Junior session.
‘Peter Jupp wants you to keep the PSCC flag flying, Join Jupps army’.
Whilst the junior coaching took place, captain for the day Nick Loftus strode to the middle with his Little Missenden counterpart and after winning the toss, Loftus, 26, put his troops into bat.
Jupp and Sempill opened up the innings for Penn Street and soon took advantage of what seemed a good batting track. Jupp shook off any pre night after effects and played some delightful cuts and with Sempill at the other end supporting his opening partner, the Street soon raced to a good start putting 90 on the board without loss. Unfortunately the good foundations put in place by the openers crumbled and Jupp was bowled the first change bowler and totalled 39. Sempill soon followed him back to the busy Squirrel garden after being given LBW and managed to contribute 38 to the PSCC effort.
Dave Lander and Steve Smith briefly put proceedings back on track but also fell victim to some accurate bowling from our Chiltonian friends. Dave ‘Patrick’ Bateman entered the dance floor next and after a superb quick fire 26 the week previously, expectations were high but psycho could only manage 5. Briggs who was playing his second game of the weekend (first of many we hope) then suffered an unfortunate golden duck, with Marky Lander not having much luck either; Nick Loftus managed a few quick singles and a wristy boundary but couldn’t add more than 11 runs to the total.
Jack Mendy managed to plug the flood of wickets and demonstrated some great attacking shots and really looked in control until he fell four runs short of what would have been a second half century of the season. Good work Jacko. Penn Street put on a respectable 164 runs for Little Missenden to chase down and with a tasty tea on the horizon, the Street fancied a profitable afternoon in the field.
Following another PSCC ‘junior half hour’ Penn Street seniors took to the field and looked to show their younger friends how it was done. Loftus and Mendy opened the workshop with some tight and disciplined bowling, but luck wasn’t on their side as a couple of dropped catches denied them the early breakthrough they so desired. Mendy showed some real pace whilst the skipper chipped away from the ever darkening wood end. Soon it was time for a change and Mark Lander was bought into the attack and soon got the first breakthrough for Penn Street and removed the Little Missenden skipper. Grant ‘Lonsdale’ Henry was also given licence to thrill but fell victim to a blister on his heel and then disappeared home to put the washing out. Young Kieran Werrell bowled out of his skin trying to add another wicket to the Penn Street effort, but the Little Misseden batsmen calmly moved onto the given land with 8 over’s spare. All in all it was a good fielding performance by the boys and possibly another 50 runs on the board would have made a more interesting affair.
Tour will prove a similar challenge, let’s hope Worcester are ready Antonius Proximo.....
