Kays v Penn Street Cricket Club PSCC on Fri 29 Jul 2011 at 14.30
Penn Street Cricket Club Won by 87 runs

Match report And so to Friday, where a mixture of faces fresh to tour and those not-quite-so-fresh still recovering travelled along the one way system which baffles even the greatest of Greek scholars and Scientologists to our old friends at Kays at Neel park.

Captain Matt Bannister took a stroll out to the pitch with the opposition skipper facing a quandary greater than that posed to Paris by Zeus in choosing between Athena, Aphrodite and Hera – the eternal question of to bat or to bowl. As luck would have it he lost the toss and Penn Street were invited to bat on what appeared to be a good batting wicket on an overcast day.

Opening the innings were Matt Reavey and Dave Harrison. Faced with tough conditions and aggressive bowling the going was initially very tough, particularly for Matt “Raina” Reavey as he fell to a barrage of short pitch bowling. Tim Coombes, the co-owner of a small regional brewery, followed soon after and the Street appeared in trouble at 31-2. Enter Chris Loftus who, in a manner similar to Hector of Troy, led a counterattack – hitting the Kays leg spinner in particular for several boundaries alongside Dave Harrison who was moving on serenely to pass 50. However after a partnership of 64 Chris fell, bowled behind his legs as he tried to paddle a delivery down to fine leg.

Mark Gloyens and Huw James followed soon after in single figures as Kays fought back into the game and with 10 overs remaining the game was evenly poised with Penn Street on 149-5. Enter Matt “the human scratching post” Bannister who immediately took the attack back to the hosts, blasting several boundaries including a pulled six over square leg. By this time Harry had moved to a fantastic hundred despite the impending need for oxygen. Matt fell for a rapid 32, and Bez (aka Simon Briggs) fell off the final ball of the innings trying to hit down the ground as PSCC reached a more than useful 237 off their 40 overs.

After an Ambrosia-esque tea fit for the gods Penn Street returned to the field of battle to defend their total. Goody opened up and was set upon by an attack of the yips possibly brought on by Bushwackers the night before, or memories of Dominies from years gone by. However he battled through and found his rhythm and removed one of the openers with a well bowled Yorker. Master Mendy was bowling excellently from the other end with real control and pace to cries from the boundary of an anonymous member – “that’s my boy!” Wyatt was removed by a super slower ball, and the pressure mounted as further wickets fell.

When Goody and Jacko were done the skipper brought himself and Nick Loftus into the attack. Nick was ever his naggingly accurate self and contained while threatening to take a wicket at any time. Banny, from the other end, created many chances which weren’t taken – within the space of one over Mark Gloyens ran under one at long on (ching, fine), and edge flew between the keeper and first slip (ching) and another edge was dropped at gully (ching). Eventually Banny had a wicket as a leading edge went high in the air and he ran back to claim the catch. Nick then joined in as the batsman spooned a delivery back to the skipper who had just moved himself in to silly mid-off and Penn Street were within sight of victory. Standing firm was Matthews of Kays, who moved into touching distance of a well deserved 50 before falling to a good catch by Raina in the deep off Bannister. Coombsey was brought on to give him a game, and he picked up the final wicket by bowling the Kays number 10 and Penn Street romped home to a 87 run win and a successful double over Kays.

And so the warriors of Penn Street returned to the Diglis for dinner, and town. Bushwackers? Why not…
