Penn Street Cricket Club PSCC v The Lee on Sun 10 Jun 2012 at 14.00
Penn Street Cricket Club Won by 3 wickets
Match report
The portents were ominous. Heavy clouds were massing once again, the forecast bleak and likelihood of getting to the end of the game without interruption from the elements was slim, as acting captain Rob Sutherland won the toss and asked The Lee to bat on an inevitably slow pitch.
To be fair, on paper it wasn't PSCC's strongest line-up, especially in the batting department. As at 8pm the previous day PSCC only had nine players listed, but a couple of phonecalls from Cally rustled up two debutants, Martin Bosson and Nick Pollard, who very kindly came from Ware to fill in the gaps, and very appreciative we were too.
Goody was looking to build on his five-for from the previous day, and he shared a hostile opening spell with Tyler, who suffered from an Umpire whose interpretation of wides would be considered ungenerous in an international Twenty/20. But very tight bowling eventually forced the breakthrough in remarkable fashion. Boakes edged to Pete Lofty at second slip. Pete fumbled, grabbed at it, dropped it again, flapped at it, scooped it up into the air and Tyler running in from Fine Leg of all places caught the ball on the rebound. Remarkable juggling from Pete, a great piece of support from Tyler. It could be our day we all thought.
Fleming who came to the crease next looked a classy batsman, and it took a quick bit of thinking from Steve Exton as he wandered out his crease to dislodge him. Then a double act from out debutants. Martin had replaced Tyler, and was bowling quickly and accurately. He dug the ball in short, Morrison hooked and Nick took a good catch at square leg.
By then a steady momentum was with Penn Street. The acting captain rolled back the years with a diving catch at cover (what on Earth was he doing fielding there I hear you ask). John Humphreys fell into a beautifully executed trap second ball, as he tried to hit it where he had hit his first shot and Jack Slade took a great catch on the boundary where he had just been moved. The bowling was tight and accurate, the fielding superb and The Lee couldn't hit it off the square - after 40 overs, they struggled had to 140-8.
As we rolled out of the Village Hall after yet another superb tea, the rain was starting to fall and the sky didn't look good. We didn't have any natural openers, so Steve Exton and Simon Briggs were asked to stand in. Unfortunately Briggsy's defence was breached after a couple of overs, but Martin Bosson came in and looked confident. However, he was bowled and then Rob and Richard Spooner came and went in short measure. At 30-4 it wasn't looking too good. But then Tyler came in and started to hit the ball around. Steve was looking comfortable at the other end and slowly the tables turned. Tyler was eventually lbw for 23 with Penn Street still needing 50odd to win. Chris Hammond scored some quick runs, and then Pete Lofty came in and batted very sensibly with Steve to almost see us over the line - Steve finally falling with the scores level having fought his way to a maiden and very much deserved first Penn Street fifty.
So a great win for Penn Street in a very keenly match against a useful The Lee side. It was one of these games where everyone dug deep and kept fighting, as every run counted, and was a great all-round team performance. But for his exemplary wicket-keeping, no byes, two stumpings and first Penn Street fifty,
