Penn Street Cricket Club PSCC v Westbourne Molins on Sat 05 Jul 2008 at 14:00
Penn Street Cricket Club Won
Match report
For the second extraordinary game running, PSCC racked up 300 batting first on another perfectly manicured Penn Street wicket!
The story of this innings however, belonged largely to one man - Peter Jupp.
Juppy, opening up with Stu Thompson, got himself off to a flyer and never looked back. While partners came and went after making useful contributions alongside him, Juppy played an innings of composure and awesome power that threatened to break records, windows, fingers and the heart of one seriously "agitated" bowler in particular whose Payned expression told the story of the day for Molins in the field!!
On the way, Molins' best opportunity to halt the Juppernaut that was meeting them head on was spilled by the midwicket fielder, who got himself a visit to Wycombe A&E for his troubles!!
We also welcomed back Dave Bannister for his first game in a while, uncharacteristically batting at 5, but looking as composed as ever before being unluckily run out when looking well set.
As Matt Bannister came to the crease, Juppy had his eyes on the ultimate prize - the highest ever score by a Penn Street batsman - currently 206* by a Mr. T. Coombes!! With 6 overs remaining in this 40 over match, he was already on a startling 157, after dispatching the bowling to all corners of the ground.
There was however to be no jamming of The Rebellion Brewery switchboards come monday morning, as Pete fell for a fantastic 157 off 113 balls, having setup a huge total that just needed finishing off in style by someone. The someone who assumed the mantle was Matt Bannister, who blazed his own way to a superb cameo in comparison to what had just taken place - 57 off 32 balls! Matt was in such confident form that he even attempted a KP-esque left-handed "moo" that looked bound for the darkest depths of Penn Woods until it sadly hit his stumps!!
At tea we ate with confidence of another fine win.
Molins started briskly in reply, whilst losing 3 wickets for 80 as one man in particular confidently played some big shots with a fair degree of success.
Damo was desperately unlucky after bowling some seriously sharp deliveries not to claim any wickets after creating some clear chances.
At the other end, Cherriott was on the receiving end of some serious Molins hitting - streaky but effective at times, but snapped up 3 wickets also for his troubles.
Then into the attack came Penn Street's 2 youngest stars - 11 yr old Ryan Greenstreet and 13 yr old Tyler Armiger, who scooped 3 wickets between them to bring us to the verge of our impressive victory. Ryan in particular should be singled out for much praise after a spell of bowling that was reminiscent of someone with years of experience in men's cricket. This was in fact Ryan's first game for the club and he took his wicket with only his 3rd ball in senior cricket. The future looks brighter than ever at Penn Street on this evidence!! Tyler picked up a useful 2 wickets to keep his excellent run of bowling going - though he has asked me not to go into too much detail with his first dimissal - far from a "regulation" caught behind!!!!
Nick Loftus then joined the attack to claim 2 late wickets, bowling in distinctively "Winwood" fashion as if inspired by some sort of higher love!!
In the end, Molins finished over 130 short of our total after being bowled out inside their 40 overs.
This said far more about the impressive display of Penn Street's batting and in particular Juppy's innings, than anything else. Molins had put up an impressive fight and continued to bat at a good run rate the whole way through their innings. A score in the region of 230 may have proved difficult to defend!
Another fine win as Penn Street enter uncharted territory for 2008 - 4 games unbeaten on the bounce. Can we stay this way going into tour?!!
