Penn Street Cricket Club PSCC v Arkley on Sat 05 Jun 2021 at 1.30pm
Penn Street Cricket Club Won by 83 runs

Match report Penn Street were delighted to host a new fixture on Saturday against Arkley CC. Having lost the Toss Arkley put PSCC into bat on a greenish deck that was still drying out after a wet Friday.

Club Captain James Sempill got off to a great start playing two delightful shots of his hip hitting the fine leg boundary on both occasions. Along with big Hitter David Adams PSCC we were looking for a fast start to proceedings. However Sempill decided to nibble at a wide one and although he pulled his bat back into his body the nick was there for everyone to see, with the Keeper just holding onto the catch. PSCC were 10 -1. Skipper for the day Pete Jupp came into bat and along with DA had to see out a tough 5 overs, where the Arkley openers were getting swing and bounce. They were certainly making the most of the early wicket advantage. While Jupp was getting his head down during the challenging spell of overs DA was working a way to hit himself out of the situation though he nicked off to a good spell of bowling by the opener Frinklin. PSCC were 47 for 2. In coming at four was Alistair “flamingo” Cossins, who took great delight in playing his favoured flamingo shot over mid-wicket and looking to move the score along with Jupp. Jupp started to get going and picked off a couple of fours with some drives though mid-off. Cossins was going well and in fact kept telling Jupp how much he was enjoying himself, until he picked out the only fielder in the deep for a catch to dismiss him for a classy 43. PSCC now 122 for 4 had some work to do to push a score past 200, which was needed as the wicket was starting to dry out and becoming better for batting. Jupp started to push on and attack the bowling and accelerated to 50 and from here he started to punish the bad ball and push PSCC closer to the 200. Foxy after a shaky start found his mojo and started to really enjoy himself and played some lovely shots to all parts of the ground to get to 50. Jupp was now in swing and even managed a rare pull shot to get him closer to his hundred which he managed with one over to go. Foxy and Jupp put on a partnership of 131 with Jupp getting to 104 Not Out and PSCC finishing on a competitive total of 253 for 3.

After a quick tea PSCC went out to field with Foxy extremely pumped and talking garbage to the opening batsman – to which end Foxy got told where to go Arkley started strong and some beautiful straight drives in the V from Candy got this team off to a strong start and made Jupp slightly twitchy. Jamie Fryer opened from the pub end and bowled some delightful deliveries which almost got us the breakthrough – Candy however, had other ideas and punished any ball what was short or too full. Matt “eye nibble” Hewlett produced a straight 8 over spell of decent pace and variety, especially with his slower ball. Matt was unlucky to not pick up a couple of wickets as he was just too good at times to get the nick. With Jupp getting ever more concerned on the run rate it was time for a change. In came Asif to take over from Fryer and the change made a difference – Bundhu came to the crease with confidence and he took the pace off the ball which gave both openers problems. Bundhu was rewarded with the wicket of Townsend that Foxy was delighted to hold onto and PSCC had the breakthrough. Another bowling change saw Chris Lovewell bowl a varied over and he made a quick breakthrough getting Patel and Hirami. Quote of the day came from Sempill with Lovers being compared to club legend Paul Goodchild. Lovers however was not so sure of the comparison and with that made an impressive spell of bowling with figures of 3 for 11 off 5 overs. Bundhu took a breather and Phil Hewlett came onto bowl leg spin for the first time ever and did a good job in keeping the visitors guessing. Candy looked extremely dangerous and it was time to get him out before he really tucked in. Enter Asif for a second spell and an unbelievable one handed diving catch at point from Matt ‘Eye nibble’ Hewlett. The catch was Collingwood all over and certainly a match winning moment. Bundhu was delighted and returned with figures of 3 for 46 off 8 overs. Take a bow sir! Luckily for PSCC we still had Haggers in the locker and he came on to dismiss the dangerous Bollers who enjoyed swinging his well-oiled blade to all parts of the mid-wicket boundary - Bollers eventually succumbed to LBW from a great spell of bowling from Haggers ( Rich O’Hagan) who finished with 2 for 27 off 7. Arkley finished on 164 – 9 from 40 and PSCC were delighted with the 80 run victory.

A great team performance all round and some great after match beers with our new friends Arkley who we will welcome back next year for a permanent fixture.

Well done PSCC
