The Lee v Penn Street Cricket Club PSCC on Sun 06 Jun 2021 at 1pm
Penn Street Cricket Club Lost by 4 runs

Match report Agonising Defeat at the Lee.
The Lee CC is a beautiful ground, if you ever get the chance to go, tucked away in the heart of the Chiltern hills, and on Sunday it was the venue for our low scoring but exciting game with our hosts.
Penn Street lost the toss and were sent out to field, quickly making the most of favourable bowling conditions and some moisture on the wicket from earlier rain.
Ben Cross and Nick ‘Sipper’ Loftus took the new ball and quickly set about causing trouble to the Lee top order. Cross struck in his first and second overs as he forced an edge to the gully, bringing a spectacular catch from unofficial debutant number 1*, Alex Woest before strangling his man down the leg side, bring an excellent catch from Martin.
Ever reliable Loftus kept things tight from the other end, eventually getting his reward for his excellent opening spell with 2 wickets, demonstrating excellent control of line and length, conceding only 8 runs.
Wickets continued to fall with regularity as Penn Street rotated their bowlers in humid conditions. Jonny Barnett bowled really well and gave good flight to the ball with his off spinners, returning figures of 1-24 from 4.2 overs.
Tollerfield (4-1-2-8) bowled with good pace from the other end attacking the stumps at every opportunity. It was also good to see unofficial debutant number 2*, Shaf Dad (4-0-0-18) get some overs under his belt with a probing spell while Farooq Hussein (5-2-2-17) bowled with great enthusiasm, which is quickly becoming his trademark at the club.
Overs from Alex Woest (2 overs for 11) and a second spell from Loftus sealed the Lees innings, with the visitors reducing the hosts to 103 all out inside 28 overs.
Overall Penn Street we excellent in the field, holding catches and keeping pressure on the batsmen. Under pressure for the renown as number one keeper at the club from Simon Fox, Sam Martin, kept excellently with some sharp glove work down the leg side and a couple of good catches.
With many reasons to be positive, the Street went out to chase down a seemingly modest total on a pitch that dried out as the sun shone down.
Sempill and Tollerfield got the innings off to a steady start in the first couple of overs, over before Tollerfield let down his defences one to nibble back between bat and pad, so no heroics this week!
This brought Ben Marlowe to the crease who immediately opted to use his front leg rather than his bat as a forward defensive 10 inches outside off stump before getting away a sumptuous drive over the covers, only to see to let his guard down in similar circumstances Tollerfield.
Next to the fore was PSCCs third official debutant**, Adam Rawlings, who also suffered the indignity of being bowled for a golden duck in his first ever game of cricket. Things can only get better from here Adam!
Meanwhile, Sempill decided to shut up shop to the Lees opening bowler Ed Boakes, who took no further wickets but was very economical through the remainder of his spell.
Cross was in to bat at 5 and looked solid for a time, before being undone by a leg spinner that turned and bamboozled him to leave PSCC in difficult circumstances at 36-4.
This brought S. Martin to the crease, who took little time to get stuck into the inconsistent leg spinner, while Sempill continued to battle away, pushing Penn Street towards the total at the other end.
On the stroke of drinks, Sempill frustratingly threw his wicket away with a lapse in concentration, as he drove uppishly to the covers leaving Penn Street in real trouble at 66-5.
Woest was in next and played a unusual shot first up as he padded away an in swinging ball of a good length, thankfully reprieved by the umpire. He and Martin managed to get away a couple of lusty blows before first Martin was bowled and then Woest was stumped 2 balls later, attempting to heave on out to a real life cow corner.
Next in was Farooq Hussein who smashed some excellent shots into the leg side, but the temptation to send the ball in orbit became too great as the Lee fielders set the trap on the long boundary and he was caught.
Shaf Dad was next to come and go, although he might consider himself unlucky to be given out LBW with a ball that initially appeared to be sliding down the leg side.
So came numbers, 10 and 11 in Nick Loftus and Jonny Barnett to see the game home. Barnett did superbly to keep out 2 overs of testing bowling, while Loftus continued to chip away at the Lees total. Pressure mounted in the field and the tension on the boundary was palpable, as Loftus and Barnett hung on but eventually the pressure got too much and Loftus was bowled, edging the leg spinner onto his own stumps, to leave Penn Street an agonising 4 runs short.
Although disappointing, a great low scoring game of cricket gave plenty of excitement in the late Sunday afternoon sun. Here’s hoping there are games as entertaining as this.

*Their actual debuts didn’t really account because that game was rained off after 2 overs.
