Penn Street Juniors vs Wooburn Narks U8

Penn Street Juniors start their season in the best way!

Captain Peter, making his debut for Penn St, did his first job correctly - winning the toss! And chose to field - again the right decision, as the team started well with a couple of wickets in the first 2 overs. Jack opened the bowling, with a wicket in his first over and we had a run out in the second over resulting from some great communication in the field - not something we always see with the Seniors! Harrison, another debutant and youngest in the team, bowled with decent pace, as did Max. Peter bowled the only games maiden, with Finn also being lean with his runs. Archie, again making his debut picked up a couple of wickets and the team fielded incredibly well - two more run outs, a well held catch by Peter - and importantly, with discipline. No one seemed to get bored (a little cold yes!) and they generally stayed in position and kept their focus throughout the match, with Alfie and Luka showing great energy, both physically and vocally. Max had the main share of the WK gloves and did a great job - well done team!

The kids made batting look easy today - against a mixed ability opposition. Which meant they had to keep their eye on the ball and score with the right opportunities. I was very impressed by the communication between pairs, and listening skills - when one said NO - the other one actually listened! Luka and Max made a steady start, before Max hit an explosive 6, and then Jack and Finn came in and swung the game in PS favour with a solid partnership. Jack hit some fine boundaries - it seems he loves the sweep shot (at least today anyway) and Finn also played some impressive shots - 'proper' cricket. Peter and Harrison with another fine partnership, one scoring runs and the other defending his wicket well against some of the better bowling from the oppo. It setup up the final partnership of Alfie and Archie to bring the game home comfortably - adding a few more to the scoreboard for good measure.

A special note to Archie who exemplified the PS spirit by stepping up and fielding for the oppo...as one of them swiftly departed the field for a comfort break.

Thanks to all who helped, supported and played in the right spirit.
