Penn Street Cricket Club PSCC v Wendover CC on Sat 04 Jun 2011 at 13.30
Penn Street Cricket Club Won by 77 runs

Match report Under a cerulean sky, Wendover wended their way over to Penn St with a team of tyros and their mentors. Chris Herriott won the toss and elected to bat on a hard, flat, stripey pitch. Unfortunately, disaster struck in the first over, when Steve Smith fell to a quick single that might have proved overambitious even for the real Usain Bolt. However, that brought a determined Peter Jupp together with an in-form Mark Lander, whose 40 runs included numerous fine chips, sweeps and hooks off his legs. Juppy never looked in any difficulties, and it was a surprise when a lapse of concentration brought his wicket for a stylish 73. Wendover weren’t let off the hook, though. Jack Mendy was in punishing form, hitting 18 off his first over, ably assisted by Chris Hammond who hooked a massive 6, his first for the club. Despite scoring quickly, wickets continued to fall, but not before both Jack and Chris had both notched up their highest scores for the club. In the end, Penn Street’s 229 all out came off just 35 overs.

The total looked as if it might prove challenging for Wendover, but Bolton, their opening batsman, had other ideas and started to score freely off some erratic bowling from Paul Goodchild. However, this season Goody has looked better the longer he has bowled (if he could bowl 20 overs in a time game he’d be unstoppable) and with Chris Herriott keeping it tight at the other end, he readjusted his radar and bowled both the openers with excellent balls. Glue, the Wendover captain, was potentially dangerous, but another fine ball from Goody brought a nick and a sharp catch from Jack Mendy behind the stumps.

Now was time to turn the screw. The field was brought in, pressure exerted and the wickets started to fall with regularity. Bridge looked briefly menacing, prompting Rob Sutherland to suggest he moved back from his close-catching position, but Chris asked him to stay in for just one more, and the next ball went straight to him. With Callum Sempill in particular bowling well, and a great reflex run-out from Cherriott, Wendover were soon 9 down. But then the last two young batsmen started a spirited fightback that brought them a quick fifty partnership. An anxious captain asked Jack to take off his pads, and three balls later the resistance had been broken with a very sharp caught and bowled.

Penn Street were victors by 77 runs, but all credit to the Wendover youngsters who had batted so well at the end.

Man of the Match: J. Mendy.
