Penn Street Cricket Club PSCC v Rivets on Sat 12 Jul 2008 at 14:00
Penn Street Cricket Club Lost

Match report After riding high in the batting stakes over recent weeks, Penn Street arrived at the ground to discover much overnight and morning rain affecting the decision as to whether to bat first or bowl. Given that the rain had only just subsided and the forecast was for things to improve dramatically as the day went on, we opted to field as the sun began to break through the clouds for the first time!
Rivets did indeed find the going tough as we kept the runs to a minimum in the first 10 overs. A score of 17 at this point suggested a total of 150 may be tricky, but Rivets had other ideas and dug in impressively. Credit should go to Nick Loftus and Damo for long spells - eaxactly 27 overs between them. Nick ending with a fantastic, but also challenging spell of 5 for 76 in 15 overs. I say challenging, because the reason his run count was as many as 76 and the reason Rivets eventually made a challenging 215, was down to a blazing 63 not out from our sometime supersub Steve Exton!! Steve carted us freely round the park to transform the Rivets total to a tough ask.
At tea, as if to rub salt in the wound, the heavens opened and a mass downpour lasting some 20-30 minutes made our theory of batting second as an advantage become redundant!!
After a slight delay, Juppy and Matt took to the middle and looked to be getting set until Matt popped one back to the bowler and Juppy holed out on the boundary despite looked like he was about to clear the boundary for a 2nd time.
Enter the chairman at a time where we needed an experienced head to guide us through the crisis! Dave played a superb innings, guiding some of the youngsters through as he found gaps and unleashed one or two fearsome lofted on-drives where possible. He eventually fell for a gutsy 41 which deserved to be a fifty. This left Damo and James Sempill to try and get us up somewhere near the Rivets total as the scorebook finally packed up after wilting in the afternoon heat!! Thanks to the Rivets towncryer / scorer for guiding us through the last 10 overs with updates, but this was never looking like affecting our chase as we fell well short in the end - all out for 147 in reply. A dogged effort in tricky conditions, but no match for Rivets who ran out deserving winners.

After making hay while the sun has shone in recent weeks, perhaps the downpour between innings was a sign of feets being brought firmly back down to earth amongst the Penn Street batsmen!!

Onto tomorrow where we pray for some fine weather to close the Beer Fest and the usual belter of a track!!!!
